Misleading emergency locksmith listings may use a location they do not occupy, advertise an unrealistically narrow price without explaining conditions, or change the scope after arrival. Focus on verifiable business details and a written pricing process rather than any single advertised number.
Common Warning Signs
- Unclear scope: Ask which dispatch, labour, hardware, tax, parking, and after-hours charges may apply, and what conditions could change an estimate after inspection.
- Identity mismatch: A marked vehicle is useful context but not proof of quality, and a legitimate provider may use an unmarked vehicle. Confirm the business name, technician identity, callback number, and invoice details match the company you contacted.
- Unexplained destructive work: Drilling is appropriate in some circumstances, but ask why it is needed, what will be damaged, and what replacement is proposed before authorizing it. Ontario does not provide a general provincial locksmith licence or certification that substitutes for those questions.
Before you book
Look for a real business name and address, ask for a price range and the technician’s name, and ask that the quote arrive by text or email. Be wary of listings with many city names and no local address, of prices that seem too good to be true and of businesses that will not confirm who will attend.
When the technician arrives
Ask for ID and confirm the quote before work starts. Drilling should be a last resort, not the first move. If the price changes sharply, you can decline and pay only for the call-out you agreed to.
Afterward
