Evaluating the Safety and Convenience of Keypad Deadbolts
Electronic keypad locks have become a popular upgrade for homes and businesses. While they eliminate the need to carry physical keys, some homeowners wonder if pin-code entry is actually as safe as a standard metal key.
The Security Advantages of Keypad Locks
- Reduced reliance on carried keys: A fully keyless model removes the risk of losing a key for that opening, but codes can still be observed or shared, and many keypad locks retain a mechanical override.
- Temporary Access Codes: You can create temporary PIN codes for visitors, cleaning services, or house guests, and delete them once they are no longer needed.
- Different attack surface: A model with no exterior keyway is not vulnerable to keyway bumping at that opening, but electronic, code, door, frame, and installation risks remain. Models with mechanical overrides still require cylinder assessment.
Potential Vulnerabilities
- Code Sharing: PIN codes can be shared or shoulder-surfed if someone watches you enter the code.
- Wear Marks: On cheap rubber button pads, the numbers you use most frequently can wear down over time, revealing your code combination. Look for touchscreen keypads with anti-wear finishes.
How codes compare with keys
A key can be lost, copied or left under a mat. A code can be shared, guessed or watched. Neither is safer in every case; they fail in different ways. A keypad lock with individual user codes lets you know who entered and remove access without changing hardware.
Choosing a code
Avoid birthdays, repeated digits and sequences. Use codes of at least six digits if the lock supports it, and change them when people leave. Wipe the keypad if it shows wear patterns. Choose a lock with an override key or external battery contact.
Where keypads fit best
Rentals, side doors, garages and offices with many users. For a primary front door with few users, a good mechanical deadbolt is still an excellent choice. See rental keyless locks and reset codes.
