Office Suite Access Control on a Budget in City Centre

A small office in a Mississauga City Centre tower does not need a full building system to stop passing keys around. There are simple, staged options that fit inside the rules of a multi-tenant building.

Start with what the building controls

In most towers the lobby, elevators and shared corridors belong to the building, and the suite door belongs to the tenant. Ask property management what you may change on your suite door. Some require a copy of the key or approval for new hardware. Get that in writing before you buy anything.

Option 1: a keypad lock

A keypad deadbolt or lever gives each person a code and removes the need to cut keys. Codes can be changed when someone leaves. It is the least expensive step and often needs no wiring. Check the door thickness, the backset and any fire rating before choosing a model.

Option 2: card or fob readers

If several doors need to be controlled, or you want a record of who entered, a card and fob system suits better. It needs power at the door, a controller and an electric strike or lock. For a suite with a glass entrance, a narrow-stile strike or a magnetic lock may be the practical answer, subject to the fire code.

Option 3: keep keys, but control them

Some offices prefer keys. A restricted key system means copies can only be made with your authorization, and a key register shows who holds what.

Plan for the exit

Whatever you choose, the door must always allow free exit from the inside. Do not lock a door in a way that needs a key or code to leave. If the suite is on an exit route, the landlord or a qualified inspector may have to approve changes.

Think about staff changes

Write down what happens when someone joins or leaves: which code is issued, which card is disabled, who keeps the log. That routine matters more than the hardware.
