How to Extract Snapped Key Fragments Safely
Keys can weaken and develop micro-cracks over years of turning heavy deadbolts. If a key snaps off inside your cylinder, the fragment can trap the lock shut. Here is how to handle a snapped key.
1. Stop Pushing the Key
The most common mistake is trying to insert the broken key head back into the lock. This pushes the snapped fragment deeper, jamming it against the pins and making extraction much harder.
2. Protect an Exposed Fragment
If part of the blade is visible, avoid twisting it, pushing it deeper, adding glue, or inserting another key. Pliers can deform a soft fragment or damage the keyway when there is little clearance. If a gentle straight pull is not clearly possible without contacting the lock, stop and arrange assessment.
3. Professional Extraction and Diagnosis
A locksmith may use a suitable extractor, disassemble an accessible cylinder, or choose another method based on fragment position, plug rotation, keyway, and lock condition. Damage-free removal cannot be guaranteed. After extraction, test an undamaged key and inspect alignment or wear so the original cause is not overlooked.
Stop and assess
Do not keep turning or pushing. If a portion is sticking out, note how much. If it is flush, do not try to dig it out with random tools.
What can be tried carefully
Fine tweezers or needle-nose pliers can grip a protruding piece and pull it straight out. Avoid glue and improvised hooks.
When to call
A technician has extractor tools and can remove the piece without damaging the cylinder. Ask whether the cylinder can be rekeyed afterwards. See rekeying kits.
