Key Broke in the Lock?

Snapping a key off inside your front door, a padlock or a mailbox jams the cylinder and leaves the door unusable. iProtect Locksmith provides mobile broken key extraction across the GTA.

Important: Avoid pushing a paperclip or superglue into the keyway. That drives the fragment deeper, damages the internal springs, and turns a simple extraction into a lock replacement.

Our Extraction Process

When you call, tell us the type of lock (house, padlock, mailbox) and whether the door is currently open or locked shut. Our technicians use spiral extractors, hook tools and lubrication to grip the fragment and slide it out of the keyway without harming the hardware.

After the Key Is Removed

Removing the piece is only the first step. We make sure you are left with a working, secure lock.

  • Lock Testing: We test the cylinder to confirm no internal pins were damaged when the key broke.
  • Rekeying: If a piece of the key was lost or you suspect it was compromised, we can rekey the cylinder.
  • Hardware Replacement: If the lock is seized or the cylinder was badly damaged, we carry replacement hardware to fix the door on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I try to pull the broken key out with pliers?+

If enough of the key sticks out to grip easily, you can try gently. If it is flush with the lock, digging at it usually pushes it deeper and damages the pins inside the cylinder.

What happens to the lock after the broken piece is out?+

We test the cylinder. If it is undamaged it goes back into service, and if you are worried about the missing key we rekey it so the old key stops working.

Can you extract a key from a padlock or a mailbox?+

Yes. Padlocks, mailbox locks and cabinet locks respond to the same extraction tools, and we replace the lock if the cylinder is too worn to keep.
