When is it Time to Replace or Rekey Your Door Locks?
Locks are one part of an entry system that also includes the door, frame, strike, hinges, glazing, key control, and household procedures. There is no universal replacement interval; review access after a key-control change and inspect hardware when operation or condition changes.
1. After Moving into a New Home
Ask who controls each exterior key and whether the locks belong to a landlord, condominium, or master-key system. When prior copies cannot be accounted for and you are authorized to make changes, prompt rekeying or replacement is worth considering.
2. After a Lockout or Stolen Key Incident
Assess whether the missing key can be connected to the address, whether another credential was lost with it, and whether the property has another access-control procedure. Rekeying affected compatible cylinders or replacing a compromised credential may be appropriate; increase urgency when the address and key were exposed together.
3. When Condition or Operation Changes
Age alone does not set a five- or seven-year deadline. Investigate wiggling, sticking, looseness, corrosion, impact, or inconsistent latching. The cause may be the key, cylinder, latch, alignment, fasteners, weather, or door rather than a need to replace everything.
4. Following a Relationship or Tenant Change
If a roommate moves out, a domestic worker leaves, or a relationship ends, changing the locks provides peace of mind. Rekeying is a fast, budget-friendly way to restrict access without purchasing brand-new hardware.
Events that call for a change
Move into a new home, end a relationship where the other person had a key, lose a key with an address on it, finish a renovation with many contractors, or have a break-in attempt. In each case, the question is not how old the lock is but who might still hold a working key.
Age and wear as a second reason
Locks in daily use for fifteen or twenty years may show wear even if nothing has happened. Signs include a key that sticks, a bolt that needs a shove, loose handles and a cylinder that turns with little resistance. Rekeying handles the first group of problems and replacement handles the second. A technician can inspect all the doors in one visit and give you a written recommendation.
