The Most Cost-Effective Upgrade for Exterior Doors
During a forced-entry attempt, failure can occur at the frame, strike, fasteners, door edge, lock, glass, hinges, or surrounding construction. A compatible reinforced strike and suitable fastening may improve resistance at the latch side, but the complete opening should be assessed.
Check the Existing Fasteners and Substrate
Factory hardware and installations vary. Short screws that engage only trim or a thin jamb may offer less resistance than a properly supported attachment, but screw length alone does not reveal what framing, masonry, metal reinforcement, wiring, or voids are behind the jamb.
Match the Reinforcement to the Opening
- The approach: Use a strike, fastener type, diameter, length, pilot hole, and anchor pattern suitable for the actual door and substrate. A three-inch screw may reach structure in some wood-framed openings, but it can be unsuitable or hazardous where construction differs or electrical, plumbing, masonry, metal, glazing, or fire-rated components are present.
Where forced entry usually succeeds
A kick to the latch side of a door puts load on the strike plate and the wood behind it. When the plate is held by short screws, the jamb splits and the bolt slides free. Locks are rarely the part that breaks.
The upgrade
Replace the strike screws with three-inch screws that bite into the wall stud. Fit a metal strike box or a longer strike plate. Check hinge screws, particularly on outswing doors, and replace any that are short or loose. Consider a jamb wrap to protect the door edge.
Test and follow up
After the work, push the door near the latch; it should feel solid. If the frame is cracked, replace that section before adding hardware. We do this work across Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville and Milton, and it pairs with a deadbolt upgrade.
