Securing Private Documents and Valuable Possessions
Cabinets and safes use many lock formats. When a key is lost or a used container has unknown key control, the available remedy may be a core change, lock replacement, combination change, manufacturer service, or—in some compatible cylinders—rekeying.
1. Filing Cabinets and Desk Drawers
Office furniture may use wafer, pin-tumbler, tubular, interchangeable-core, electronic, or proprietary locks.
- Service options: With authorization, a provider may replace a core or replace the assembly. A control key works only on the matching interchangeable-core system and normally requires the core to be in an operable state.
2. Specialty Locks on Personal Safes
Small personal safes use key locks, digital keypads, or combination dials.
- Mechanical dials: Combination recovery, manipulation, drilling, lock change, or manufacturer service depends on the safe and lock. A forgotten combination does not imply an external reset is available.
- Digital keypads: Reset and override options vary by model, authorization procedure, battery state, audit requirements, and lock condition. Avoid generic “master code” or override-key claims, and confirm whether service affects the container’s warranty or rating.
Small locks, real consequences
Filing cabinets, staff lockers, medication cabinets and cash drawers hold information and valuables, yet their locks are often forgotten. A single key may have been copied years ago and given to people who no longer work there.
What can be done
Many cabinet and locker locks can be rekeyed on site or swapped for a new cylinder of the same type. Safes with key locks vary: some can be rekeyed, others need a new lock. Combination safes can have the combination changed, which is often the better route for a business.
Planning the change
List each lock, note the brand and any numbers stamped on the face, and decide who should hold keys. A technician can work through them in a single visit. Record who received each new key, and store spares securely. See master key systems and commercial safe lockouts.
