The Mechanics of Master Keying Explained
A master-key system can give change keys access to selected openings while one or more higher-level keys operate a planned group of compatible cylinders. It does not necessarily include every lock in a facility, and it should be designed around authorization, expansion, key records, and compromise procedures.
How it Works: The Internal Pin Layout
In a conventional pin-tumbler cylinder, a correct key positions pin separations at the plug’s shear line so it can turn. Master keying can add master pins in selected chambers, creating more than one valid pin separation at the same physical shear line.
- The change key: Operates the opening or group assigned in the keying schedule.
- The master key: Operates the planned set of cylinders above that level. Additional levels may exist, but more combinations can affect system capacity and resistance to unintended key interchange.
Key Benefits for Property Managers
- Convenience: Authorized staff may be able to carry fewer keys for their assigned openings.
- Access Control: You can limit employee access to specific zones (like supply closets or individual offices) while maintaining administrative access.
- Planned response access: Properly assigned keys may support authorized maintenance or emergency procedures for designated rooms. Life-safety and emergency entry must not depend on an unsupported assumption that one key opens everything.
The basics
In a master-key system, each lock has its own key and a master key opens many locks. Extra pin positions in each cylinder allow two keys to turn it. Systems have levels, from a change key up to a grand master.
Planning
Draw up who needs access to which doors, then design the hierarchy. Use a restricted keyway and keep a register.
Risks
A lost master compromises many doors, so limit the number issued and store them securely. See rekeying a commercial property and access control.
