Stuck Outside? What to Do in a Home or Condo Lockout

Finding yourself locked out of your own home is one of the most frustrating and stressful experiences a homeowner or tenant can face. Whether it’s in the evening or in the middle of a busy workday, panic can cloud your judgment.

Before you take drastic action—like breaking a window or damaging your door—take a deep breath and follow these practical steps to resolve a house lockout safely and efficiently.

1. Stay Calm and Assess Your Safety

Your physical safety is the absolute highest priority.

  • If it is in the evening or you feel unsafe standing outside, move to a well-lit area, a public place, or wait inside your vehicle if you have access to it.
  • If there is a safety hazard (such as a child locked inside, food left cooking on the stove, or running water), call emergency services (911) immediately alongside an emergency locksmith.

2. Check Other Points of Entry

We often lock the front door out of habit but forget other entry points. Carefully walk around your property and check:

  • Back or side doors: Are any of them unlocked?
  • First-floor windows: Are any windows unlocked or only partially latched? (Be extremely careful trying to climb through windows, as you could cause injury or lock damage).
  • Garage doors: If you have an external keypad or a smart garage door opener app, check if you can gain entry this way.

3. Contact Someone with a Spare Key

Before calling in the professionals, consider who else might have access:

  • Family members or roommates: Are they nearby or heading home?
  • Landlord or property manager: If you rent a condo or apartment, ask whether an authorized person has an emergency-access procedure or a key for your unit. Do not assume the building uses a master-key system; access and fees depend on the lease and property policy.
  • A trusted neighbor or friend: Did you ever leave a spare key with them for emergencies?

4. Know What Not to Do

When stress is high, it is easy to make decisions that lead to expensive repairs:

  • Don’t kick the door: Kicking or forcing a door can split the frame, shatter the lock casing, and cause hundreds of dollars in damage.
  • Don’t use plastic cards on modern deadbolts: The “credit card trick” only works on simple spring latches (like bedroom doors). It will not work on a deadbolt and will likely ruin your card.
  • Avoid amateur lock picking: Using paperclips or bobby pins without training can damage the lock cylinder, turning a simple lock pick job into a full lock replacement.

5. When to Call an Emergency Locksmith

If you’ve exhausted safe options, consider a mobile emergency locksmith. Ontario does not use a general provincial locksmith licence as a universal quality credential, so evaluate the provider’s identity, business details, insurance information if relevant to the work, written scope, and pricing process rather than relying on an unsupported “licensed” claim.

  1. Pricing scope: Ask what is known from the description, what may change after inspection, and which dispatch, labour, hardware, tax, or after-hours charges may apply.
  2. Arrival estimate: Treat an ETA as an estimate affected by traffic, weather, call duration, technician location, and site access. Ask for updates instead of a fixed promise.
  3. Authorization: Expect the provider to use a reasonable process to confirm that you are authorized to enter. Acceptable evidence and alternatives vary when identification is inside.
  4. Entry method: Ask for the proposed method and consequences before drilling or replacing hardware. The least-destructive suitable option depends on the lock condition, security features, door, and lawful scope.
