What is a Fire-Rated Door? Standard Codes & Latches

Reviewing Hardware on a Fire-Rated Door Assembly

Fire-rated openings are assemblies whose door, frame, glazing, hardware, labels, installation, and surrounding construction work together. Requirements vary with the approved design, location, use, rating, and applicable Ontario code provisions. A component described as fire-rated does not make the entire opening compliant by itself.

What to Verify

  1. Labels and approved assembly: Do not paint over, remove, or assume the meaning of a label. Confirm the door and frame rating and the approved hardware schedule.
  2. Closing and latching: Many fire-door locations require self-closing and self-latching operation, but the applicable documents determine the exact requirement. A door closer must be compatible, correctly installed, and adjusted without defeating accessibility or egress needs.
  3. Hold-open and access-control devices: Do not wedge a fire door open or add magnetic locking hardware based on a generic rule. Approved release logic, alarm integration, listing, wiring, inspection, and permitted use are system-specific.

Before drilling, replacing hardware, or changing how the door operates, consult the property authority and an appropriate fire-protection, door-hardware, or building-code professional. Preserve labels and document the approved work.

The rating explained

A fire-rated door is part of a tested assembly: door, frame, hinges, latch and often the closer. The rating gives the time the assembly resists fire. A label on the hinge edge and frame identifies it.

Hardware rules

Latches must engage each time the door closes. Closers must be approved and working. Extra holes, wrong hardware or wedges can void the rating and cause a failure in a fire.

What owners should do

Ask before adding locks or drilling. Keep the labels intact. Inspect annually. See panic bars and door closers.
