Reviewing Panic Hardware and Safe Egress
Panic hardware, also called an exit device or crash bar, is designed so occupants can release a compatible exit door from the egress side. The required hardware and operation depend on the occupancy, occupant load, door and fire rating, approved plans, and applicable Ontario requirements.
Questions to Resolve Before Altering an Exit
The Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, approved fire-safety plan, and authority having jurisdiction may affect an opening. Confirm:
- whether panic hardware is required for this specific door and occupancy;
- how the door must release from the egress side, including permitted force and special-knowledge limitations;
- whether the assembly is fire-rated and which listed components, labels, and modifications are permitted; and
- whether any added lock, deadbolt, access-control device, or after-hours procedure would interfere with required egress.
Maintenance & Inspections
Commercial exit hardware can receive heavy use. Include it in the inspection and testing program required for the property, and document binding, incomplete latching, loose parts, damage, or changes in closing behaviour. Code compliance and fire-door inspection questions should be referred to the appropriate qualified professional or authority.
What the device is for
A panic bar lets anyone leave through a door with one push, without a key, code or special knowledge. It matters most in places where people gather: shops, restaurants, offices, schools. If the door does not open in an emergency, the consequences are serious.
What inspectors and insurers look for
Doors that open smoothly, bars that latch and release every time, no chains or padlocks on exit doors, and clear space outside. Codes and inspection rules differ by building type and municipality, so ask the fire prevention office in Mississauga, Oakville or your own city what applies.
What owners can do
Test each bar monthly, record the result and repair faults quickly. Replace worn or bent parts with approved hardware, especially on fire-rated doors. See fire-rated doors and heavy-duty hinges.
