Maintaining Premium Security for Modern Entry Doors
Multipoint locks operate two or more locking points along a door edge, with the number, position, handle movement, and key sequence varying by system. They are used on some fiberglass, wood, patio, and other exterior doors.
Why Multipoint Locks Stand Out
- Distributed engagement: Multiple points can increase resistance to separation at selected locations when the door, frame, keeps, and installation are suitable.
- Seal compression: Some systems pull the door toward weatherstripping at several points. They do not prevent warping or guarantee alignment or energy performance.
Common Issues & Maintenance
Because multipoint mechanisms span the entire height of the door, minor door sag can throw the locking points out of alignment with the frame strikes.
- Handle feels heavy: If you have to pull the handle up hard to engage the lock, your hinges likely need adjustment to re-center the door.
- Follow the maintenance instructions: Do not spray a generic lubricant into the keyway or gearbox. Identify the manufacturer and use only its specified product, locations, quantity, and interval; some sealed gearboxes should not be lubricated in the field.
How they work
A multipoint lock engages the door at several points along its height using a rod system. It gives strong pressure against the frame and helps seal the door against weather, which is why it is common on European-style and patio doors.
Why they fail
Misalignment of one latch can stop the whole system. Dirt, lack of lubrication and a door that has dropped are the usual reasons.
Care
Lubricate the moving parts, clean the strikes and check hinges. Do not force the handle. See door frame reinforcement.
