The Core Lock Hardware of Access Control Systems
An electric strike is one possible locking component in a commercial access-control system. It replaces or modifies the strike area so compatible latch hardware can be released electrically. Door, frame, latch, voltage, duty rating, listing, monitoring, and life-safety requirements determine whether it is suitable.
How an Electric Strike Works
- Door Locked: When the door is closed, the mechanical latch of the lock sits inside the strike keeper, keeping the door secured.
- Releasing the lock: After an authorized request, the system changes the keeper state according to the strike configuration. Some openings still require normal operation of lever or panic hardware.
Fail-Safe vs. Fail-Secure Configurations
Power-loss behaviour is commonly described as:
- Fail-secure: The strike generally remains secure from the access-controlled side when power is lost. Mechanical egress may still be available through the lockset or exit device.
- Fail-safe: The strike generally releases when power is lost.
Neither mode is universally “standard,” “high security,” or correct for an exit. The approved design must account for egress hardware, fire rating, accessibility, alarm integration, emergency power, security risk, and applicable Ontario requirements.
How an electric strike works
It replaces the standard strike plate. When powered or unpowered, depending on type, the keeper releases so the door can be pushed or pulled open. It is controlled by a button, keypad or card reader.
Fail-safe and fail-secure
A fail-secure strike stays locked when power fails, useful for security. A fail-safe strike unlocks, useful where doors must open without power. Choose based on the door’s use and code.
Installation points
Door alignment, wiring, power supply and a mechanical override all matter. See access control systems.
