Village and rural properties around Glen Williams, Norval and the escarpment roads often have generous lots, older buildings and neighbours who are not close. That has advantages, but it also means less passive surveillance. A calm review of doors and outbuildings is a good investment.
Walk the property
Go around in daylight, as a visitor would. Note every door, gate and window. List what each one has: a deadbolt, a latch, a padlock or nothing. Look at how visible each is from the road and from neighbours.
Front and back doors
A deadbolt with a solid bolt and a strong strike plate secured with long screws is a basic standard. Check that the door frame is sound where the strike sits. See reinforcing door frames and deadbolt installation.
Garage and utility doors
Attached garage doors into the house are often weaker than the front door. Give them the same lock and frame checks. See garage door lock repair.
Outbuildings
Barns, sheds and workshops need hasps that are through-bolted and padlocks rated for the weather. See padlock installation and repair.
Keys
Count keys and decide who has them. If keys are unaccounted for, rekey. Don’t leave keys near the door.
Lighting and sight lines
Motion lighting near doors and clear sight lines from the house make opportunists reconsider. Trim shrubs that hide doors.
Access for help
Make sure the property is easy to find and reach. A clear civic number, a gate code available to help and a plowed lane help emergency and locksmith service alike.
