Old Oakville and Bronte: Lock Upgrades for Older Doors

Older Oakville streets have character, and the doors are part of it. Adding security does not mean losing that. The goal is to strengthen the weak points and keep what makes the door special.

Find the weak points

Most break-ins at older doors use the frame or the strike, not the lock. Check the frame around the strike. Is it split, soft or held by short screws? Is the door itself sound, or does it flex?

Reinforce the frame

A strong strike plate with long screws that reach the stud helps a great deal. A reinforcement plate on the door edge can protect the wood around the lock. See reinforcing door frames.

Add rather than replace

If the existing lock is period hardware, consider leaving it and adding a modern deadbolt nearby. Choose finishes that suit the door.

Rekey period locks

Many older cylinders can be rekeyed. See lock rekeying.

Consider a smart lock carefully

A motorized lock needs a door that closes squarely. If the door is old and out of true, fix that first. See smart lock in older door guide.

Heritage rules

If your home is designated, check with the Town before changing visible hardware.

Keeping character while improving security

In Old Oakville and Bronte, many homes have original doors with hardware that gives the entrance its look. You can often keep the exterior appearance and upgrade the parts that matter: a deadbolt of better grade installed where the old one sat, a reinforced strike box, longer screws in the jamb and a sound door sweep. Ask for a photo record of the door before work, and keep the original hardware if it is valuable or historically interesting.
