Reviewing Security on Less-Visible Garage Entryways
A side or back garage entry may receive less natural surveillance than a front entrance. Review visibility, lighting, door and frame construction, hinges, latch and deadbolt operation, glazing, and how the opening fits the household’s egress and fire-separation needs.
1. Install a Solid Core Door
Construction varies. An exterior or garage-separation opening may also have fire-protection requirements that a generic replacement can defeat.
- The approach: Identify the existing door and frame labels, approved assembly, exposure, swing, and code requirements before selecting solid-core, steel-clad, fiberglass, or other hardware.
2. Add a Dedicated Deadbolt
Side entry doors often rely on a simple locking door knob.
- The approach: If a deadbolt is permitted and compatible, evaluate its documented rating, bolt engagement, strike, frame reinforcement, and smooth operation. Select fasteners only after confirming the substrate and checking for wiring, plumbing, glazing, metal reinforcement, or fire-rated components; a fixed three-inch prescription is not universal.
The soft target
A door from the garage to the house is often lighter and less protected than the front door, and the garage offers privacy. Once inside, an intruder is out of view.
Improvements
Fit a solid-core or steel door, a proper deadbolt, a reinforced strike and long screws in the frame. Lock it even when you are home. Reset any garage opener remote that goes missing.
Habits
Keep the overhead door closed when you are not using it, and do not leave the remote in the car. Check the side entrance to the garage as well. See frame reinforcement.
