Securing Your Home After a Burglary: Immediate Action Plan

Immediate Steps to Restore Peace of Mind and Home Security

Experiencing a home break-in is deeply unsettling. Prioritize personal safety and follow police instructions about entering, touching, photographing, or changing the scene. After the property is released, plan temporary securement and permanent repairs without destroying evidence needed by police or the insurer.

1. Document the Damage

Ask police and the insurer what documentation they need. When permitted, photograph visible damage and retain invoices and replaced parts according to their instructions.

2. Reinforce the Door Frame

Forced-entry damage can involve the frame, strike, lock, door edge, glazing, hinges, or surrounding wall.

  • The repair: Restore structural damage first, then select compatible strikes and fasteners for the actual substrate. A three-inch screw reaches framing in some wood installations but is not a universal prescription.

3. Replace or Rekey the Cylinders

If keys or address-bearing documents were taken, assess every affected credential and opening promptly. Depending on ownership, compatibility, damage, and building rules, the response may include rekeying selected cylinders, replacing locks, disabling electronic credentials, changing codes, or coordinating with property management.

The first steps

Ensure everyone is safe, call the police and avoid disturbing the scene. Photograph the entry point. Tell the locksmith what was damaged so they bring the right parts.

Securing tonight

A temporary reinforcement or board-up can restore security until permanent repairs are made. Ask what is temporary and what is permanent.

Afterward

Rekey or replace locks if keys were taken, reset alarm and garage codes and review other entry points. Keep the police report number, photos and invoices for your insurer. See garage entry doors and frame reinforcement.
