Standard vs. High-Security Deadbolts: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Evaluating the Performance and Cost of Premium Locks

Deadbolts differ in construction, testing, key control, installation, and resistance to particular attacks. A higher-security deadbolt may improve specific parts of the opening, but product labels should be checked against an identified standard and the door and frame still need assessment.

1. Resistance to Lock Picking and Bumping

Some basic cylinders offer limited resistance to manipulation. Certain higher-security products use sidebars, rotating elements, security pins, or other mechanisms intended to increase picking and bumping resistance. No cylinder should be described as pick-proof; compare the exact model’s independent test claims and installation requirements.

2. Solid Hardened Steel Reinforcements

Materials and protective features vary across price levels. Some products add hardened inserts, shields, reinforced bolts, or rotating collars intended to increase drilling or wrench resistance. These features should be evaluated on the exact model and as part of the complete opening.

3. Key Control (Restricted Duplication)

Many unrestricted key blanks are widely available. Restricted-key programs may limit access to blanks and require an authorization process, but the rules vary by manufacturer, patent status, dealer agreement, and registered system. Ask who can authorize duplicates, where they can be made, and how records are maintained.

What the extra money buys

Higher-grade deadbolts use thicker bolts, hardened inserts and better internal parts. High-security versions add resistance to picking, drilling and bumping, and often restricted keys.

Deciding

For interior doors, a standard lock is fine. For exterior doors in busy areas, rentals and businesses, the upgrade is a modest cost for a lasting benefit.

The whole door

A high-security deadbolt in a weak frame is wasted. Check the strike, screws and frame. See reinforcing door frames and double versus single cylinder.
