Caledon winters are cold, with freeze-thaw cycles that test every lock and door. What looks like a broken lock is often a frozen or swollen one, and the wrong response can turn a minor issue into a repair.
A frozen car door or lock
Moisture gets into door seals and lock cylinders, then freezes. Do not force the key or pull hard on the handle, which can break the key or tear a seal. A de-icer made for locks, applied sparingly, is the safe option. A warmed key can help, but keep it dry. Never pour hot water over a car door or lock, because it can refreeze, crack glass or damage paint.
A stiff house cylinder
Cold makes lubricants thick and metal contract. If a key turns hard, try a small amount of dry graphite or lock lubricant made for cold conditions. Avoid oil sprays, which collect dirt and can gum up the pins later. If the key doesn’t turn, stop and call for help, since forcing it can snap the key inside.
A door that swells or drops
Wood doors take on moisture and expand, while frames and hinges shift. A door that closes badly in winter may have loose hinge screws or a dropped top hinge. Tighten the hinge screws first. If the bolt still misses the strike, an adjustment of the strike plate or the hinges may be needed. See door hinge repair.
Keypad locks and batteries
Cold shortens battery life, and a keypad or smart lock may fail on the coldest mornings. Replace batteries before winter, keep spares inside, and know where your backup key is.
Rural access
On rural Caledon roads, drifting snow and unplowed lanes can delay any service. When you call, tell us about lane conditions and gate codes so we can plan realistically. If you are locked out in extreme cold, tell us about anyone vulnerable in the home or vehicle, and call emergency services if there is a safety risk.
Prevention
Lubricate locks in the fall, check weatherstripping, and make sure spare keys are held by someone reachable. Our lockout service and the Caledon page explain how we respond.
