One Key for Everything: A Keyed-Alike Plan for a Caledon Property

A typical Caledon property has more doors than a suburban lot: house, attached garage, detached workshop, barn or shed, gate, and maybe a guest house. Carrying and managing a key for each is a nuisance, and the temptation is to hide spare keys where they should not be. A simple key plan solves this.

What “keyed alike” means

Keyed-alike locks are set to accept the same key. You can open the house, garage and shed with one key, while each lock keeps its own function. It is most useful when everyone who has access to one door should have access to the others.

When you need a hierarchy

If some people should open only some doors, you need a hierarchy. A worker might have a key to the workshop and barn but not the house. A family member might have the house and garage but not the equipment shed. A master-key system supports this by giving each lock its own key and adding higher-level keys that open groups of locks. For a rural property, a small system of two or three levels is usually enough.

Plan before you buy

Draw or list every door and gate, who needs access, and how often. Decide which openings need a proper deadbolt, which need a padlock and which are best served by a keypad. Consider what happens if a key is lost: you want the option to rekey without replacing every lock.

Choose hardware to suit outdoor use

Cylinders on exterior doors and gates should be weather-rated. Choose lock finishes that suit Caledon winters and road salt, and use cylinders that can be rekeyed, so a lost key doesn’t mean a new set of locks. See our guide to choosing padlocks for gates and barns.

Control the spare keys

The safest master plan fails if spare keys are left in the truck or hung on a nail by the door. Keep a small, recorded set, and store the master key somewhere secure. If a contractor or a seasonal worker returns a key, note it.
