Cottage and Seasonal Property Lock Checklist for Caledon

A seasonal property, whether a cottage near the Credit River, a hobby farm or a weekend retreat, is empty for long periods. That is when security matters most, because there is nobody there to notice a problem. A short checklist at each opening and closing helps.

Before you leave

Walk every door and gate and check that each locks and latches. Look at hinges and strike plates for damage. If a door has been forced or is sticky, fix it before you go. Remove valuable tools and equipment, or lock them in a room with a secure door.

Key control

Count your keys and note who holds them. Do not leave a key in a hiding spot near the door. If a previous guest or a contractor held a key you cannot account for, rekey the locks. It is often less expensive than replacing hardware, and it means only the new keys will work.

Outbuildings and gates

Sheds, boat houses and workshops are the usual target. Check that padlocks are weather-rated and hasps are through-bolted. If you use several padlocks, a keyed-alike set reduces key clutter. See choosing padlocks.

Electronics and batteries

If you use a keypad or smart lock, replace batteries before the property is left empty. Test the lock from outside. Keep a physical key available in case the electronics fail.

Lighting and visibility

Motion lighting and visible locks deter opportunists. Trim shrubs that hide doors and windows. Keep the driveway tidy so it does not look abandoned.

When you return

Look at the property before you enter. If a door or window looks disturbed, do not go in. Call police. Check for damage on the locks, and have a professional look at any door that has been forced. See our emergency door repair page.

Getting help at a remote address

When you call, give the civic address, the nearest crossroads and any gate codes. We confirm availability and an arrival estimate before dispatch. See the Caledon page for more.
