Keypad Codes for Houses With Several Households: What Works

A keypad lock solves a real problem in a busy household: nobody needs to carry a key, and access can be given or removed without cutting anything. In a house with more than one household, a few simple habits decide whether it improves security or weakens it.

One code per person

Give every person their own code, not a shared one. A shared code cannot tell you who came in, and it has to be changed for everyone when one person leaves. If your lock supports many codes, use them. If it holds only a few, use them for the people who come and go most.

Temporary codes for trades and guests

For a cleaner, a contractor or a guest, create a code with an expiry, if your lock supports it, or delete it after the visit. Write down what each code is for and who has it.

Choose the right door

A keypad on the side or basement entrance suits tenants and landlords. On the main front door, some families prefer the keypad plus a backup key. Whichever you pick, keep a way in that does not depend on power or a network, such as a physical key or an external battery contact.

Batteries and backup

Replace batteries on a schedule, not when the lock complains. Cold weather shortens battery life, so check more often in winter. Keep a spare set of batteries in the house, not in the car.

Rotate codes

Change codes when someone moves out, when a code has been shared widely, or at least once a year. Do not use dates of birth, simple sequences or the address.

Fit the lock to the door

A motorized lock needs a door that closes squarely. If the deadbolt is stiff or the door drags, fix the alignment before installing electronics. Our smart lock installation service includes checking backset, door thickness and closing. See batteries and outages for what happens when power or Wi-Fi fails.
